PostPost subject: Microsoft sees January Vista release

CAPE TOWN (Reuters) - Microsoft Corp's release of Windows Vista should begin in November with roll-out to businesses and broader release of the software to general customers by January, company officials said on Tuesday.

Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates told local software partners at a Cape Town technology conference there was an "80 percent chance" Vista would be ready as scheduled for broad release in January, a company spokeswoman said.

The spokeswoman, who asked not to be named, said the current plan was to begin releasing Vista to business customers in November, with the general release in January.

There has been speculation that the much-expected new operating system could be delayed, although this has been denied by top company officials.

Microsoft originally targeted a 2005 launch for the new Windows, then pushed the release to 2006 before announcing in March that Vista would again be delayed to improve the product.

The new versions of Microsoft's Windows and Office software are central to the company's efforts to revive a stock that has underperformed major indexes since the start of 2002.

Gates made his comments to Microsoft software partners at a conference in Cape Town to discuss how technology can be harnessed to boost Africa's competitiveness.

Same thing I've heard for a while. Nov OEMS will get the BDD kit and first copies, followed by MSDN/Technet/ActionPack and TAP and then Retail copies hit the stores.

MSDN should have beta 1 and 2 already. Public releases, should also have longhorn server beta 1 and 2 and office 2007, exchange 2007 beta 2.

You should also get the later builds when they come out (or short after).

should be in the back of the MSDN kits, like all beta CDs. I think you can also download them from the MSDN library online (requires login to the passport tied to that subscription).

After what the company has done with other betas and launches, they have to get vista out in 2007 or it will hurt them big time. I know they want a solid product, and not to have a repeat of ME, there trying to keep that vision for the Windows "Pillar", at the same time I have to wonder about the aquisition of so many new markets and companys that MS has made their own, WinInternals, Groove) And lastly, I would like the record to relect, that I hate steve with a passion.

I'm really in no hurry to upgrade. Is there any reason I 100% have to have Vista in January? I don't think so. I'm glad MS will probably wait to launch it. As you mentioned, we sure do NOT want a repeat of Windows ME. I think MS learned from their past mistakes. If it hurts their stock, I don't think they're too concerned. They seem more concerned with making sure Vista is solid.

I'm starting to wonder if it's that, or if one of steve's magical pillars is taking more attention than longhorn right now. It has been 5 years in dev.

Somehow with everything hitting a new release in 2007, expecially all the server stuff since thats mostly what I test, companies are probably going to do a few major upgrades and forget the rest. It may hurt MS more than help them.

longhorn server is a bear to work with in it's current form. I ran it for a while, basically take all the changes from vista, and add them to 2003 R2. Then add native IPv6 support and some other stuff in and tada. The files for it should be on the vista DVDs, it just takes a different install key.

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver/longhorn/default.mspx

A little more info on it, blackcomb is in testing internally, basically the version after vista. There should be an R2 of longhorn server also.

Looks unfortunatly though that unless your an MSDN/TechNet/Connect Beta Tester or TAP (Technology Adoption Program), then your SOL to get LH Server, well legally. And I can't distribute that due to a non disclosure agreement.

Since the last time I read of it blackcomb has taken a major change, and changes in names too, apparently it explains why vista was in dev for so long too, at first blackcomb was to be whistler's predecessor (XP) and then it was pushed back and longhorn (vista) was to be launched before blackcomb (now codename figi) and offical Windows Vienna. Haven't found anything more from a source I trust with at least a little bit.

source :still shady, but usually right, bink.nu
