1. IrfanView - http://www.irfanview.com/ - Free imaging tool. Paste screen shots in it with ease.
2. Ad-Aware - http://www.lavasoft.de/ - Free adware/spyware finder and removal tool.
3. GSpot - http://www.headbands.com/gspot/ - Figures out what codecs (audio and/or video) are needed to play a file if it is not playing right.

I'll add more when I get more time. Feel free to add any and then if it looks good, I'll add it here.

yea adaware is awsome, also spybot search & distory works well, they supposed to conflict, but i havent ran into a problem yet, they both will find some things the other won't. as adam i recommend adware. i would recommend spybot also.

havent tried irfanview, looks good, im kindia used to the office 2003 previewer, but will try it out to see what all it can do.

alcohol 120 is cool, but its only a free 30 day trial before u have to buy it, and daemon tools does almost the same thing (minus the burning) and its free. oh and if they don't have alcohol 120 at download.com then go to www.afterdawn.com (VERY good burning fourm, software, and guides)

K-Lite Mega Codec Pack 1.34

Mirrors
dl.codecpack.nl/klmcodec134.exe
a1.edskes.com/klmcodec134.exe
b3.edskes.com/klmcodec134.exe
c2.edskes.com/klmcodec134.exe
f1.edskes.com/klmcodec134.exe
ftp2.edskes.com/klmcodec134.exe

if youre in need of codecs get this, use realplayer alternative instead of realplayer since realplayer sucks really. i would get the quicktime 7 preview 3 for windows instead of the quicktime that comes with the codec pack http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/preview/

Ohh that would be very useful. Sometimes I download MP3's and they won't play because I don't have the right codecs...

http://ultravnc.sourceforge.net/
UltraVNC allows you to view the desktop of a remote computer that is running an UltraVNC server. You can use the ultraVNC program or a Java web applet to view it.

sysinternals is an admins best friend, I run background info on all my test boxes so when I remote into them I know what I'm on and the settings for it, automatically.

I would have to recommend Kubuntu 6.10 for anyone who is looking for an operating system for their new computer and do not want to pay the crazy prices that Microsoft and Apple demand.

I actually made a program very similar to this in VB .NET class in college, maybe they yanked my source code!

Two really nice programs:

HijackThis
http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/threat_analytics/hijackthis.php
A security tool that you can use to scan your systems settings and registry, quickly quarantine unwanted files, and do some other things. I haven't updated since 1.86 so I'm not sure what the features in 2.0 or even the interface are like. I love the program though.

OpenOffice
http://www.openoffice.org
Very similar to MSOffice but free and entirely open source.

Does "Open Office" allow you to open the files on "MS Office"? Because i want to be able to do my projects at home, but I don't have Microsoft Office so i can't. and I want to be able to bring it to school on a flash drive, and open it up onto that computer.

EDIT:

Never mind, read up on it, and yes it does.

I found this the other day and I have ran these tools on a few systems and liked em. They are registry cleaners, for those of us that install/uninstall alot, among other things.

http://www.regsofts.com/index.html

Free Window Registry Repair 1.2 and RegSeeker are the two i am talking about on that page. Nice tools and free.

If you decide to use Kubuntu, Ubuntu or any Linux OS, you should install Wine.

Basically, Wine is Windows on Linux.

One of my personal favorite programs is Camstudio. It allows you to record your desktop into a flash or AVI.

QT Tab Bar: http://qttabbar.wikidot.com/qttabbar
Vista and XP: Adds a tab bar to windows explorer, I've been using it for months now and it's never caused any crashes or errors that I've noticed. Has made it onto my list of necessary apps for a fresh XP install.

DisplayFusion: http://www.binaryfortress.com/displayfusion/
Allows you to configure the desktop background of multiple displays independently, you can also set a large image to span across multiple displays regardless of resolution differences (great for images from hubblesite.org)
